🧑‍⚖️ Supreme Court Hears Case on Whether Marijuana Users Can Legally Possess Firearms
The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in a closely watched case over whether people who use marijuana or other illegal drugs can be barred from owning firearms, highlighting an unusual political crossover as gun‑rights and civil‑liberties groups line up against the federal government. The law at issue, 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(3), prohibits anyone who is an “unlawful user” of a controlled substance from possessing a gun, a restriction that has split lower courts since the Court’s 2022 Bruen decision created a new historical‑tradition test for gun regulations. During oral arguments, several justices expressed skepticism about the government’s position, with the ACLU and NRA arguing the statute is vague and criminalizes millions of otherwise lawful citizens, while gun‑control groups and the Trump administration defended the restriction as consistent with historical limits on dangerous individuals. The case centers on a Texas man who smoked marijuana several times a week and legally owned a firearm, and the outcome could have major implications for Second Amendment rights in a landscape where cannabis is legal for medical use in most states and recreational use in about half the country. 📜 Congress Advances Farm Bill With New Hemp Rules, but Rejects Delay of Looming THC Ban
A key House committee has approved the 2026 Farm Bill without adding the one provision hemp stakeholders were urgently seeking, a delay of the federal ban on intoxicating hemp‑derived THC products, after the chairman ruled two GOP amendments on postponing the ban “not germane” and prevented a vote on them. The rejected proposals, filed by Rep. Jim Baird, would have pushed back the November implementation of last year’s policy change that will outlaw most intoxicating hemp products, but lawmakers were told that consumer‑product regulations fall outside the Agriculture Committee’s jurisdiction, leaving the ban on track and the industry facing significant uncertainty. 🧠Major Study Finds Lifetime Cannabis Use Does Not Increase Cognitive Decline or Dementia Risk in Older Adults
A large Yale and Oxford study using data from hundreds of thousands of adults in the UK Biobank and U.S. Million Veteran Program found that lifetime cannabis use is not associated with faster cognitive decline or a higher risk of dementia, with researchers reporting no causal link between cannabis use and long‑term cognitive aging and noting that users even showed slightly better baseline cognitive scores, likely explained by demographic differences rather than cannabis itself. The findings add to similar results from Israeli and Danish cohort studies, which also found that older adults with a history of cannabis use performed better across multiple cognitive domains than non‑users and experienced slower declines in certain executive functions.
🧸 Children’s National Hospital Reports Sharp Rise in Cannabis Addiction Among Teens and Even Tweens
Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. says it is now treating more adolescents, including some as young as 11, for cannabis use and addiction as high potency products become easier for kids to access and conceal, with clinicians warning that modern cannabis routinely contains 20% to 25% THC and vape cartridges can reach up to 70%, far stronger than what many parents remember. Doctors report that cases have shifted from fentanyl to cannabis, noting increases in emergency room visits, primary care consultations and addiction program referrals, and they emphasize the risks of potent products for developing brains, including higher rates of psychosis, bipolar disorder and cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome in young users.
